Goodridge, Sarah - portrait of lady in a red dress

When originally added to the collection this artist and young lady wearing were both unknown.

That is still the situation with the sitter, but there is now a tentative attribution as artist to Sarah Goodridge (1788-1853).


The reason for the possible attribution is that a kind visitor has provided a portrait below which appears quite similar in style and which has been attributed to Sarah Goodridge.

Both these images are taken through the glass in different lighting conditions, the initial one with a scanner and the later one with a camera, so it is difficult to be make a firm attribution.


However, the pose is similar, the shading on the hair is similar, and the way the dress is painted is similar.

As with most artists, Sarah Goodridge did alter her style during her life. 477
