Colfs, Albert Louis - portraits of a man and a lady

This pair of miniature portraits are both signed "A Colfs" for Albert Louis Colfs (1899-?) a Belgian artist who also worked in America.

Although not mentioned in Blattel, he is recorded elsewhere as a Belgian painter and miniaturist. He painted portraits in miniature especially and made multiple visits to Japan, China, and America. Immigration records document his arrival in New York by ship twice in 1935 and again in 1948. He is mentioned in “Two Centuries of Signatures of Artists of Belgium”.

The two portraits shown here were purchased in America, but were possibly painted by him in Belgium prior to visiting the United States. The sitters are unknown. 392

Many thanks for the information. I have been able to research the artist and amend the entry as a result of your clue.

Albert Colfs was my uncle and painted a lot of royalty as well as Rosevelt. He died on the 10th of May 1967 at Issy-les-Moulineaux. France.
